Statement on the intended Canonisation of Pope Paul VI

(4th, 2018) The British Council of Christians and Jews (CCJ) welcomes the news that Pope Paul VI is to be canonised by the Roman Catholic Church.

After the horrors of the Holocaust, Pope Paul VI led the transformation of relations between the Jewish world and the Catholic Church. The significance of Nostra Aetate, which enabled formal Catholic-Jewish dialogue, is felt as keenly now as when it was declared in 1965. Today, because of Pope Paul VI’s reforms, Catholics and Jews have a strong friendship, enabling continuing dialogue. CCJ is delighted to work closely with both communities so that the legacy of the past can lead to positive relations in the future.
