Commitment to the way of Jesus cannot come at the expense of deprecating the people from whom Jesus came. If, as I maintain in this book, the conventional account of Christian origins is based on a caricature of Judaism, then using it even for the ends of liberation theology cannot be justified. Theology will liberate to the extent that its truth leads to right action. Supersessionism has wrought tragic consequences. It is a matter of justice that we find ways of speaking about ourselves in relation to the Jewish people if we are to truly liberate.
