Council of Centers on Jewish-Christian Relations Formed

A coordinating council of 24 centers and institutes devoted to mutual understanding and cooperation between Christians and Jews has been formed in the U.S.A. Called the Council of Centers on Jewish-Christian Relations (CCJR), it will be headquartered at the Center for Christian-Jewish Learning at Boston College. News of the Council"s activities will be carried on the web site of the Boston center, www.bc.edu/cjlearning.

Besides providing a vehicle for cooperation among its member institutions, the CCJR hopes to promote research and publication on the history, theology, and contemporary realities of Jewish-Christian relations. The Council is applying for membership in the International Council of Christians and Jews as a second U.S.A. member, along with the National Conference for Community and Justice (formerly National Conference of Christians and Jews).

Father John Pawlikowski, director of the Catholic-Jewish Studies program at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, has chaired the planning committee for the new Council. The other planning committee members are Rabbi Barry D. Cytron, director of the Jay Phillips Center for Christian-Jewish Learning, St. Paul, Minnesota; Dr. Philip A. Cunningham, director of the Center for Christian-Jewish Learning, Boston College; and Dr. Franklin Sherman, Associate for Interfaith Relations, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Permanent officers will be elected at the initial meeting of the new Council to be held at St. Mary"s Seminary in Baltimore on October 27-28, 2002.       F.S.
