Statements by CCJ and BOD on the attack in Manchester

London, May 23, 2017 - After the islamistic attack in Manchester on Monday, May 22, the Council of Christians and Jews (CCJ) issued the following statement:

"The Council of Christians and Jews stands alongside the people of Manchester in their moment of unbearable suffering and tragedy. We remember in our prayers all those who have been affected by last night’s cruel and inhumane attack: the lives lost, the injured, the emergency services, and individuals who rushed to help strangers in need in acts of ‘defiant kindness’ as described on BBC Radio 4.

Manchester is a city of immense strength, boundless creativity, and inspirational diversity. In the face of terror, we offer a small prayer for hope, knowing that each act of kindness demonstrated by individuals last night is a much-needed reminder that selfless community and resilient love between peoples will preside in the face of such great adversity."

Also Jonathan Arkush, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews (BOD), sends thoughts and prayers to Manchester victims and families. He said:

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those caught up in the Manchester Arena attack at the Ariana Grande concert last night. This savage attack on young people will require a response, but we will not hand victory to the attacker by allowing ourselves to become divided. The response by people of all communities in Manchester, offering shelter and transport to each other, shows our society’s resilience, and that terrorism will not win.”
