There is a fundamental distinction between contemporary hermeneutics and the medieval schools of Christian exegesis, especially regarding the First Testament, where persons, places, objects, and events are seen as types of Christ and the church, proclaimed in the Second Testament. Further, the Fathers of the church and the Reformers considered themselves bound by a strict doctrine of scriptural inspiration, which maintained that no interpretation can contradict scriptural sancta (Roman Catholic and Protestant) and church doctrine (Catholic).
