Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion Sponsors Interfaith Journey to Germany
Under the title "Remembrance and Renewal," an interfaith journey to Germany will be sponsored by Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR), the seminary of Reform Judaism in the United States, from August 31 to September 12, 2006. The invitation to the journey indicates the expectation "to witness small and large ways that Germans are coming to terms with their past, and the possibilities that a more diverse Germany of Jews, Christians and Muslims will face the 21st century."
Included in the journey will be a trip to Oberweisel on the Rhine, the home town of Rabbi Alfred Gottshalk, the Chancellor of HUC-JIR, where a monument will be erected to the lost Jewish community. The proposed to erect such a monument has created considerable controversy in the town, and the sponsors of the journey have expressed the hope that a large international delegation will be evidence of widespread support for the project. The journey will also include events in Dresden, Berlin, and elsewhere.
