Jewish History in Warsaw Presented on New Web Site
The city of Warsaw, Poland, has established a web site presenting the history of the Jewish community in Warsaw by means of a depiction of 54 locations of Jewish significance where buildings or parts of buildings survive. Pictures and descriptive text indicate something of the rich Jewish life that once characterized these areas. Also included is a time-line of Jewish history in Warsaw from the 11th century to the present. The text is presented in both Polish and English. The material was prepared with the cooperation of the Jewish Historical Research Institute, Warsaw. The Polish capital once had the largest Jewish community in Europe, comprising some 30% of the city's population. The Jewish population in Warsaw today is thought to number about 6,000.
